The first step you need to take before you tackle any of the following garage organization hacks is to get rid of all of the things that you don’t need or want to keep in your garage. Why put extra effort into trying to make space in your garage for items that really don’t need to be there? Purchase a handy storage shed for your backyard and you will immediately make your garage organization incredibly simple.

Not only will a shed help you with your garage organization but it will also mean that you can have your garden/yard equipment closer at hand to where it will be used.  Don’t worry if you don’t have the extra cash to purchase a shed right now. Classic Buildings has a great rent-to-own program with low monthly payments and no down payment required.

Laundry Room Station

Easily grab a hanger and hang up your clothes right out of the dryer – Photo By: James Angus and James Bolton, the Cavender Diary

We love this idea from Cavender Diary. It’s so simple yet incredibly ingenious that we bet you are going to say “Now, why didn’t I think of that!” First, they mounted and stacked two sets of reclaimed kitchen cupboards and side shelves above their washer and dryer to maximize storage right to the ceiling. All of your laundry products can be stored inside with lots of space for extra storage on the shelves. But underneath the cupboards is where the real genius lies. It’s a simple plumbing pipe installed with toggle bolts at the perfect height for your empty hangers. As your clothes come out of the dryer, you can easily grab a hanger and hang them up on the rack to the right ready for you to take back into your bedroom. The hanging rack can also be used for out-of-season coats to free up space in your hall closet.

Hanging Bikes

Build your own hanging bike rail – learn how

If you are wondering what is one of the best and simplest garage organization hacks for storing all of your family’s bicycles, here it is. This easy to assemble bike rack can be put together in about 30 minutes and will cost you around $60 for the parts. You’ll need:

  • One 6′ 2 X 4
  • One 6′ 3/4″ black pipe
  • Two 3/4″ black pipe nipples
  • Two 3/4″ black pipe flanges
  • Six 3″ stainless steel welded rings
  • Six Husky 18″ hangers
  • 4″ drywall screws
  • 3″ drywall screws

Your bikes will be easy to access and hang up, even for your children. Watch the above video and learn how to make your own.

Hanging Hard to Store Items

You may have a number of items that just don’t store very well on shelving like extension cords, rope, and larger tools. Hanging up those hard to store items could be just the solution you are looking for. This garage organization hack comes from Cavender Diary and involves mounting plumbing pipe on one of the walls in your garage and using pot hanging hooks from Ikea to hang up those awkward items. This is a better solution than getting shelves that have hooks fixed to them because you can slide the hooks along the pipe to make room for items of different widths and you can add or take away the hooks as necessary.

Overhead Wood Garage Shelves

Make the most of your overhead space by installing handy shelving

Wooden shelves hanging from the ceiling of your garage will help you make the most of the normally unused space above you. Since this area is a little less easy to access, it’s a good solution for storing things that you don’t use every day such as Christmas ornaments or seasonal toys and sporting equipment. The following video will teach you how to make your own with these few items:

  • 2x4s upright support members
  • 2x6s ripped down to 2x2s for ledger
  • boards and under shelf supports
  • 4×8 sheets of plywood ripped down to 3×8 (ripped down at the home store)
  • Wood screws
  • 1/4″ toggle bolts

Magnetic Strips with Soup Cans

Here’s another great idea from Cavender Diary. You’ve probably seen magnetic strips mounted on walls before, both inside garages and in your home, but here is a great twist. The magnetic strips only work to hold metal items that will stick to the magnets. But what about those things that aren’t magnetic? Use empty tomato soup cans – what a great idea! It won’t cost you anything and it’s very Americana. You are free to choose your favorite soup flavor, or maybe baked beans are more to your taste!
